Launching NEW Monthly ‘Being Better’ Challenge

Updated: 15 hours ago

Challenge On: ‘Being Better for Earth’

OK, so I may be known for getting a little giddy at times, but I am ridiculously excited to launch this first monthly challenge.  Not only is it something that we’ve been talking about doing for a while, but it can also be a great way to build connections around the values that Compassionart Creations stands for.

As we said when we launched our ‘Best Humans of 2025’ campaign in December, we feel strongly that being a good human isn’t about grand gestures, or even about a defined way to bring that to life, but it’s about a commitment to doing good in the world - creating joy, showing compassion, building community, and leading with humanity.

Importantly, it’s a ‘work in progress’.  Our best is not the same 24/7/365, but we can all strive to be our best selves in any given moment.  And hence the title of our new monthly challenge series - The ‘Being Better’ Challenge.

Rooted in the concept that ‘better’ is always progress, no matter how tiny, every month this challenge is going to encourage us to try to be a little ‘better’ in some way.

April being host to Earth Day, it seemed natural to set our first challenge around the beautiful planet we all share, and I was EVEN MORE giddy when Deena Aspinall enthusiastically jumped on board to have Our Footprints Eco Store & Refillery partner with us on this!  Eeek!

Our Footprints Eco Store & Refillery, which opened in Kamloops in 2020 and Deena took over in 2022, is a treasure trove of environmentally-friendly finds.  The Refillery, as the name suggests, offers MANY different products that can be purchased as refills - straight from the pump into the container of your choice.  Don’t have a container?  Deena has you covered there, too!  In my excitement, I had left my house without the dishwashing liquid bottle I had planned to refill, so I happily purchased a glass jar for 25 cents and left with my Bergamot Lime dish soap.

I absolutely love the refillery and can’t help but reflect on Anita Roddick launching this concept with The Body Shop back in 1976!  I remember the refill option well from my 1980’s teen years!  Incredibly, this hasn’t become more commonplace yet, but I am in awe of Deena’s efforts to offer such a fantastic range of refillables and an easy system to support refilling.

Beyond the refillery, Deena has many eco-conscious offerings to check out, from household cleaning and laundry products to personal care, beauty, kitchen products, and food!  Need a gift?  Check out her gift baskets!

If you can’t visit her Kamloops store, you can check out Our Footprints Eco Store & Refillery online too!

So, our first ‘Being Better Challenge’ is all about how we can all do a little more to help protect this amazing planet that we share.  This one, as far as we know, is the only planet available to us.  There are so many challenges like the climate crisis that seem enormous and overwhelming, but nobody starts running marathons (as far as I know!) by immediately running 42km. They start by walking or jogging, and gradually build up.  However, nobody ends up running marathons without at least putting their running shoes on (OK, except Zola Budd - another 1980’s throwback!).  You get my point.  Starting is always the most challenging step, which is why we want to create some momentum together!  Borrowing other people’s ideas is always easier, and the ‘Being Better for Earth’ challenge not only helps to spread ideas, it also encourages accountability to give them a try throughout the month, and rewards those who participate!  Gotta love a good win/win/win!

The challenge runs April 1-30, and invites you to submit your eco-conscious tips online here.  We will be sharing a selection of tips shared throughout the month, and everyone who submits a tip online will receive a discount code to reward themselves with 15% off Our Footprints Eco Store & Refillery!

In colder months, we set the thermostat to 20 degrees C during the day and 16 degrees C at night along with keeping warms blankets around. In warmer months, we keep it set to 26 degrees but keep the windows open ar night and during the morning to keep things cool then close the blinds when it gets hotter outside.
